Nice is the capital of the Riviera and fifth largest city in France located in southern Europe at the southeastern extremity of France. Nice is a privileged crossroad between the Alps, Provence, Corsica and Italy. The city occupies an exceptionnal natural site in the heart of French Riviera. It stretches over a coastal plain open soachward onto the mediterranean and bounded from East to West by a succession of wooden hills.
Nice enjoys an exceptionnal microclimate that has contributed to its renown for some two centuries. Open onto the sea, the city is protected from the winds by its hills, then, to the west, by the Estérel mountains and the Northwest by the barrier of the Mercantour Alps. The climate is always mild in winter and never too hot in summer, thanks to the sea breeze. You can often lunch on a terrace with no more than a T-shirt in February when the rest of France is shivering in the cold.
Which makes city Nice fashionable are italianate facades of modern Nice and also retained mementos from ancient past, when the Romans ruled the region from here, and earlier still, when the Greeks founded the city. This all make Nice the best base for visiting the rest of the Riviera.
